Philosophy
The Hospital Sisters of St. Francis (HSHS) sponsor St. Nicholas Hospital. The Hospital Sisters of St. Francis is a congregation of religious women bound together in faith and by their vowed commitment to God in the Roman Catholic Church.  They seek to witness God’s saving presence in the world by their lives of prayer, community living, and especially by their service in the healing mission of Christ.

St. Nicholas Hospital exists to provide a delivery of healthcare based upon belief in the sanctity of human life, the dignity of each person, and the responsibility of society to the individual and the individual to society.  We seek to provide the best possible care for the sick, to ensure the highest professional and ethical standards of medical competence and leadership, to develop educational programs, and to promote research and service activities.  We strive for a quality of care that is concerned, personal, and compassionate, directed to the patient as an individual, as a family member, and as a member of a larger civic community.  By informing our patients and their families about their illnesses and encouraging them to participate in their care, we achieve a higher level of quality of care.

In offering this service, we utilize the most qualified persons, both religious and lay.  We are aware of our employees’ personal worth and unique talents, provide them with the continuing opportunities to grow and develop their talents, and compensate their competent, dedicated service justly and fairly.

To fulfill this goal of excellence in service, St. Nicholas Hospital strives for a continuous review and improvement in all of its activities in all areas.  In our concern to integrate services with the total healthcare of the civic community, we recognize our responsibility to participate in community-wide planning, to be responsive to the health needs of the community, to cooperate with others working to alleviate pain and suffering, and to assist in the education of all persons concerning basic health needs.

We encourage all who share in the efforts of the Hospital to make themselves a part of the Franciscan ideal of compassionate care and to render service in such a way as to assert dignity and reverence for others.

In keeping with these beliefs, St. Nicholas Hospital abides by the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare Services.
