Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Emergency Services Department is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians and emergency nurses with support from every area of the Hospital. All St. Nicholas Hospital Emergency Service physicians are members of Infinity HealthCare.
St. Nicholas Hospital has been designated by the State of Wisconsin as a Level III Trauma Care Facility. Committed to providing optimal care to trauma patients, this designation indicates that St. Nicholas Hospital is capable of providing assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, emergency surgery, and, if necessary, arranging transfer to a Level I or II facility for definitive surgical and intensive care as necessary.
The Emergency Department has the distinction of earning numerous awards during the past several years, including the PCR 5-star Patient Perception Award for excellent overall quality of care in 2010.
The Emergency Department features: two large, dedicated trauma rooms; three large treatment rooms; five general exam rooms; a dedicated obstetrical/gynecological exam room; a room dedicated to specialized treatment situations; a bereavement room; a decontamination area; a double ambulance garage; and its own entrance.
Staff members are certified in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, and trauma. The most advanced treatments for stroke and chest pain begin here. The department also performs some outpatient services and procedures.
Poison control information is available 24 hours a day by calling The Poison Control Center at
1-800-222-1222. Staffed by a toxicologist at all times, the Center provides information and advice to callers.
Orange Cross Ambulance, Inc. operates a Sheboygan County station from the Emergency Department at St. Nicholas Hospital. Paramedic staff who provide advanced pre-hospital medical care are stationed at the Hospital. Orange Cross offers emergency intercept services to other outlying EMS units at their request.
St. Nicholas Hospitals close proximity to the I-43/Highway 23 interchange means rapid emergency treatment is only minutes awaywherever you may be in our service area.
In addition, medical air transport services provide transportation to tertiary care facilities when the situation requires more extensive care than can be provided on-site.
