St. Nicholas Hospital announces its achievement, as a recipient of the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ in this 18’x40’ banner mounted on the Taylor Drive entrance of the Hospital. This distinctive award places the Hospital within the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for exemplary service to patients.Sheboygan, Wis. — St. Nicholas Hospital is the recipient of the 2009/2010 HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™. The Hospital is being recognized as being in the Top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for providing exemplary service.

To celebrate their achievement, community and Hospital leadership, the medical staff, colleagues, and volunteers were invited to the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ presentation made by Ashley Lemon, of HealthGrades.

The ceremony began with Brasseaux welcoming Ms. Lemon, "HealthGrades is a leader in the healthcare quality field. It helps patients and their families find the best healthcare providers through objective quality ratings analysis."

"We continually strive for patient care excellence at St. Nicholas Hospital and are committed to our patients receiving a positive experience of our compassionate care," said Mary Brasseaux, CEO. "Our employees, medical staff, and volunteers are encouraged to be involved in fostering a Franciscan ministry to bring Christ's healing presence to all. This award is a testament that our core values of respect, care, competence, and joy are lived by all who work here and is felt by all who use our services."

During the presentation Lemon noted this is the second consecutive year, St. Nicholas Hospital has ranked among the Top 5 percent of hospitals in the entire nation for excellence in patient experience.

"To receive the award once is a tremendous honor. To repeat is quite a remarkable achievement."

Upon accepting the award Brasseaux said, "I am very proud of everyone here at St. Nicholas Hospital for taking our commitment to patient satisfaction seriously. I have the privilege of receiving many thank you letters from patients and their families each week, so I know how great our team is! It is my pleasure to have tangible proof that our Franciscan mission is being well received in Sheboygan. When you look at your name badges, you see our organizational values: Respect, Care, Competence, and Joy. When you look at our staff you see them living these values to their fullest potential every day."

Recent research shows that patients' choice of a hospital is influenced by service and amenities, as well as clinical quality.

"As people make their healthcare decisions, they are considering not only the outcome of a procedure or treatment, but what type of experience they can expect to have," said Michele Oostdyk, Assistant Administrator, Patient Care Services. We strive to make that experience one that will make them feel comfortable to come back again if they need healthcare. We also want them to be able to tell a friend or neighbor about the excellent experience they have had here at St. Nicholas Hospital."

"Every year, we complete an exhaustive review of outcomes at the nation's non-federal hospitals, based on an objective analysis of more than 41 million Medicare records. As part of our objective research, HealthGrades also assesses how the nation's hospitals compare in terms of patient experience. In our study we analyze patient survey data administered and collected by the US Department of Health & Human Services. This year, more than 3,700 hospitals nationwide participated and were evaluated by HealthGrades," said Lemon.

"As president of the medical staff, I am proud to be part of a group of providers that strives for excellence. We understand that patients can choose where they go for healthcare, so it is an honor to provide a patient experience better than 95 percent of the hospitals in the nation. We also thank our patients for giving us the opportunity to care for them," said Clifford G. Martin, MD, FACOG, President, St. Nicholas Hospital Medical Staff.

The HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™

The HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ is based on an analysis of the federal government's Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey, also known as the CAHPS® Hospital Survey, or HCAHPS. HealthGrades is the first company to help hospitals market this data. The end result is consumer-friendly information from the leader in healthcare ratings that consumers already know and trust. The HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ aggregates recommendations from patients and identifies those hospitals that provide a superior patient experience.
