St. Nicholas Hospital Fourth in the Nation to Have New State of the Art Digital Mammography Technology
"Women in Sheboygan County will have access to the latest cutting edge technology in digital mammography," said Suzanne Timm, Director, Diagnostic Imaging Services. "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the MAMMOMAT ® Inspiration from Siemens Healthcare in December 2010 and St. Nicholas Hospital will be the fourth in the Nation to have this equipment."
According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer each year in America , which is the most common form of cancer in women.
"Early detection is key in treating breast cancer. Mammography can help detect breast tumors at their earliest, most treatable stages," said Dr. Ian Sproat, Medical Director of Diagnostic Imaging Services. "Digital mammography will enhance detecting small abnormalities and provide higher image resolution."
The MAMMOMAT ® Inspiration captures breast images with an X-ray detector that converts images into a digital picture that can be displayed immediately on the system's computer monitor. Unlike film, digital mammograms allow physicians to manipulate image characteristics such as magnification, orientation, brightness and contrast, which improve the ability to view specific areas of the breast. To help further ensure patient comfort, the Inspiration has an automatic sensor to help provide adequate compression needed for the breast to visualize pathology. With the MAMMOMAT Inspiration system, results are produced more quickly, helping to decrease anxiety for patients . In addition to screening and diagnostic mammograms, stereotactic biopsy procedures can also be performed on the system on a Mammotest prone table.
As part of its ongoing commitment to providing quality care, St. Nicholas Hospital is accredited by the American College of Radiology Mammography and Mammography Quality Standards Act.
