An Epic Mission : Hospital Sisters Health System Division-Eastern WI Hospitals To Implement an Electronic Health Record System
Sheboygan , Wis. — For Tanya Townsend, Chief Information Officer of Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) Division-Eastern Wisconsin, the transition to move all medical health records to an integrated electronic health record system in 2011 is not only an information technology project but a transformational clinical mission that will enhance the quality of care already being provided to patients.
HSHS Division-Eastern WI, which includes St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan , and St. Mary's and St. Vincent Hospitals in Green Bay , has chosen Epic Systems Corporation out of Verona , Wis. , to provide software to implement its electronic health record system.
According to KLAS Enterprises LLC, an independent research firm specializing in monitoring and reporting the performance of healthcare vendors, Epic was the leading software vendor in 2010.
“We plan to be the first health care system in Northeastern Wisconsin to go live with Epic, the most advanced integrated electronic health record system to support coordinated care with the utmost safety and quality, while providing an exceptional experience for patients and families," said Therese Pandl, President and CEO, of the HSHS Division-Eastern WI. “In addition, one of our physician partners—Prevea Health—has been using Epic for nearly 10 years. Our community physicians will also have the opportunity to use Epic through our Community Connect program."
Having an integrated electronic health record means one patient and one record will be shared between the hospitals and clinics.
“In today's information technology driven healthcare industry, it's important for clinics and hospitals to stay on the cutting edge of technology," said Clifford G. Martin, MD, Prevea Sheboygan Women's Care. “When Sheboygan Women's Health joined Prevea Health in 2008, we transitioned our paper health records to Epic, an electronic health record system. Now, with the opportunity for more physicians and health care providers to share and continuously update the electronic record, our ability to always make the best treatment decisions will be enhanced."
“Healthcare providers will have access to the most current patient information such as allergies, medications, recent test results—all the medical history a provider needs to make informed treatment decisions," said Ashok Rai, MD, President and CEO of Prevea Health . “Patient records can also be accessed from the hospital, clinic, home, and even remotely through smart phones and tablets. As a physician, my patients' well-being is the most important thing to me. I can use my smart phone to pull up patients' charts and see how they're doing."
Through the partnership of sharing records between the three hospitals and providers using the Epic system, patients will have the opportunity to utilize MyChart, which provide patients access through a secure web portal to:
Through the Meaningful Use incentive of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, the federal government has encouraged health care providers to adopt health information technology to enhance the quality and efficiency of recording patient information.
