Fall Farmers Markets Bring Lots of Nutrition
Sheboygan, Wis. — Farmers market season isn't over yet, and fall is a great time to load up on good nutrition. This is the time of year we see pears, apples, pumpkins, pomegranate, parsnip and turnip, cauliflower, figs, cranberries and sweet potatoes. "That's a big variety of fruits and vegetables that are good sources of Vitamin C, Folate, Vitamin A, Potassium and fiber," said Michelle Schmitz, Registered Dietician, St. Nicholas Hospital.
One of the key messages from US Department of Agriculture My Plate program is to fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, and choose a variety of colors. Shopping at a farmers market offers good choices. "These items are locally grown and picked at their peak, which means they contain an abundance of nutrients and flavor," said Schmitz. "It can also be a money-saver for families. Typically when foods are in season, they are less expensive."
Schmitz recommends a fall farmers market as a fun outing. "It's a way to introduce new fruits and vegetables to your family's diet and learn how to make creative, healthy meals together," she said. And, you might want to stock up. "Many of these items can be frozen and saved for winter months," said Schmitz. "Frozen fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, and canned fruits in light or natural syrup are healthy winter choices. And mixed blends of vegetables can be frozen, then used later for stir-fry, soups, or casseroles."
The Sheboygan Farmers Market at Fountain Park runs through October 30.
