St. Nicholas Hospital to Sponsor a Community Presentation on Sports Concussion
Sheboygan, Wis.An elbow to the head, a blow from the ball, a collision with another athlete, a fall, or a tackle...a concussion can happen in a matter of seconds.
St. Nicholas Hospital will be sponsoring a free community presentation on sports concussion on Monday, February 8, at 6 p.m., at North High School. This presentation is crucial for athletes, parents, coaches, medical professionals, or individuals wanting to learn more about concussions.
Mark B. Hallett, MD, Senior Medical Director for ThedaCare Physicians and Medical Director of the Wisconsin Sports Concussion Collaborative (WSCC), will discuss "Sports ConcussionUnderdiagnosed and Undertreated."
A concussion is an injury to the brain. It's usually caused by a blow to the head and can take several days or more to heal. The effects of these concussions vary between individuals, and many mild concussions are undiagnosed and unreported.
"Concussions are more common than we previously thought and they can present with a variety of symptoms, and healing times vary by individual, especially in the adolescent athlete," said Margaret Bauer, Athletic Trainer, MS, LAT. "Improper treatment or recognition can lead to repeated concussions, prolonged symptoms, decreased academic performance, and potentially permanent disability, thus knowing and recognizing possible signs of a concussion and seeking treatment is so important."
Registration is recommended. For more information about the program, contact Margaret Bauer at 920/284-0912. To register, call 920/459-4636 or [click here]
