Cancer Treatment

HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital works closely with Matthews Oncology Associates and the Sheboygan Cancer & Blood Specialists to administer radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Treatments can be done in the clinics or at the hospital.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is often an important facet of cancer care. Our experienced radiation therapists treat cancer with state of the art equipment, including image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). IGRT is a type of radiation therapy that includes imaging techniques during each treatment. During this therapy, radiation is focused tightly at the treatment area, which may make it possible to use higher doses of radiation. This often increases the possibility of tumor control and results in shorter treatment schedules. HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital is the only facility in Sheboygan that offers IGRT.

Radiation therapy can be used in combination with surgery, chemotherapy or by itself. It can also be used in a palliative manner to control bleeding or pain, or shrink tumors to make them easier to remove surgically. In the case of prostate cancer, we also offer brachytherapy, or radioactive seed implantation, as a therapeutic treatment option.

Xofigo® for Prostate Cancer Patients
HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital is now offering Xofigo, an IV injection used to treat pain and bone metastases in patients with prostate cancer that is resistant to testosterone-lowering medical and surgical treatments. Xofigo is a radioisotope that mimics calcium and forms complexes with the bone mineral at bone metastases sites. In order to be a candidate for this new treatment, the cancer has to have spread to the patient’s bones with symptoms, but not to other parts of his body.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy, which is administered on an inpatient or outpatient basis, uses drugs to destroy cancer cells by stopping them from growing or multiplying at one or more points in their cell cycle. The registered nurses who administer chemotherapy complete specialized education and preparation to provide the safest care to our patients.
